Now the historic structure, built in 1963, is coming down to make way for a new academic building – and the University of Louisville invites fans to help send it out in style.
U. of L., will pay tribute to Crawford Gym in several ways before demolition begins in mid-August. The university will hold an open house for former players and fans on Thursday, Aug. 4, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Activities will include an 11 a.m. media event in which Hall of Fame Coach Denny Crum and several players will share memories of their days in Crawford.
Now the general public, alumni, friends of the university and staff will be able to purchase equipment from the basketball court and other items from Crawford Gym through this online auction. Scoreboards, bleachers, goals and other items will be available for your pleasure to bid on with all proceeds benefiting those in need of tuition assistance. The bidding will start shutting down at 7PM on Aug. 5. Again all proceeds from the auction will benefit the Denny Crum Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for 100 Louisville-area students each year.
“Today’s students deserve the best, and the new building will provide much-needed, state-of-the-art classroom space,” Crum said. “Like our players and our fans, I’m sad that Crawford’s days are numbered. But these events will give all of us a chance to reminisce, and the auction will enable our fans to take a piece of history with them.”
So we are asking you to bid often and bid hard because these proceeds could help someone you know. Thanks for your time and for your bidding.
